A home for human-created art

3Hats exists to support artists, makers and genuine human creativity.

We welcome traditional art, digital art, photography, sculpture, illustration and other creative work made by people.

Artwork that is substantially generated by generative AI is not permitted on 3Hats.

AI can assist your process. It should not replace the artist.

What is allowed

Artists may use digital tools and technology as part of their normal creative process.

This can include things such as:

• Digital painting and drawing software

• Photography and photo editing

• Colour correction

• Resizing and upscaling

• Noise reduction

• Scanning or photographing traditional artwork

• Background or object removal

• Clean-up and restoration

• Accessibility tools

• Other tools that assist with presenting or refining artwork created by the artist

The important distinction is that the artist remains the primary creator of the artwork.

What is not allowed

3Hats does not permit artwork where the main visual content has been generated by generative AI.

This includes:

• AI-generated paintings or illustrations

• AI-generated characters or figures

• AI-generated photographs or photorealistic images

• AI-generated environments or backgrounds that form a substantial part of the artwork

• Prompt-generated compositions presented as original artwork

• Work where generative AI has replaced a significant part of the artist's own creative contribution

Minor use of AI-assisted tools does not automatically make artwork prohibited. We consider the overall creative process and how much of the final artwork was actually created by the artist.

Why we have this policy

3Hats was created to give artists a place to share, discover and support work made by other people.

We believe artistic skill, experimentation, mistakes, practice and individual expression are worth protecting.

Our goal is not to reject technology. We support tools that help artists create.

But we want 3Hats to remain a place where people can reasonably expect that the artwork they discover was genuinely created by an artist.

How we review artwork

We may use a combination of automated tools and human review to identify artwork that may substantially contain AI-generated material.

These systems are not perfect.

If artwork is flagged, we may review it before taking action.

Where necessary, we may contact the artist and ask for information about how the artwork was created.

We may ask for process evidence

If there is reasonable doubt about whether artwork complies with this policy, we may ask the artist to provide evidence of their creative process.

This could include:

• Sketches or preliminary drawings

• Work-in-progress images

• Layered working files

• Timelapse or process recordings

• Reference material

• Photographs of physical artwork

• Other reasonable evidence showing how the work was created
  

Being asked for evidence does not mean that an artist has done anything wrong. It simply helps us make a fair decision.

If artwork does not comply

Artwork that substantially contains generative AI content may be removed from 3Hats.

Repeated or deliberate breaches may result in further account action in accordance with our Terms and Conditions.

Where possible, we will aim to give artists a clear explanation of why artwork has been removed.

What if I am unsure?

If you are unsure whether a tool or process is acceptable, a useful question is:

“Did I create the artwork, or did the software create the artwork for me?”

If you created the artwork and technology simply helped you edit, refine or present it, it will generally fit the spirit of 3Hats.

If generative AI created a substantial part of the final visual work, it should not be uploaded.

Our principle

Human creativity comes first.

We want 3Hats to be a platform where artists can confidently share their work and where viewers can confidently discover art created by people.

Artists, not algorithms.

Digital tools are welcome.
AI-assisted editing is acceptable.
Artwork substantially generated by AI is not.
